These figures compare revenue, not profit. Both loaded and empty miles use time and resources.
The calculation, explained.
- Total miles = loaded miles + deadhead miles
- Loaded-mile revenue = Load payment ÷ loaded miles
- All-mile revenue = Load payment ÷ total miles
A trip you can compare.
A $1,800 Load with 600 loaded miles pays $3.00 per loaded mile. Add 100 deadhead miles and revenue becomes about $2.57 per total mile. Both figures describe revenue before costs.
Questions worth asking
Which empty miles should I include?
Include empty miles to pickup and any empty miles after delivery that you allocate to this trip. Use the same approach when comparing Loads.
Is revenue per mile the same as profit per mile?
No. Revenue is the payment divided by miles. Fuel, driver pay, overhead, time, and other costs still need to be considered.
