What is a Dry Van?

A Dry Van is an enclosed trailer used for freight that does not require active temperature control. Packaged goods and palletized shipments are common examples. The enclosed body provides shelter, but it does not make every commodity suitable for the same trailer.

Door openings, interior dimensions, floor condition, loading equipment, and the specific trailer configuration still matter. A trailer length alone is not a promise of usable capacity.

Match the freight to the actual trailer

Ask for the shipment’s total weight, piece count, dimensions, packaging, and loading method. Confirm whether pallets can be stacked and whether freight must stay separated. Check the equipment’s actual specifications and the carrier’s capacity for the proposed move.

  • Describe the commodity and packaging.
  • Confirm total weight and dimensions, including packaging.
  • Check door clearance and usable interior space.
  • Confirm dock, forklift, pallet jack, or other loading arrangements.
  • Ask about floor condition, cleanliness, and commodity restrictions.

Make the pickup plan clear

A clear posting describes the origin, destination, pickup date, equipment, and any special handling. Before making arrangements, confirm appointment windows, who loads and unloads, and any required documents.

For example, “20 pallets” leaves several questions open. Adding pallet dimensions, total weight, whether stacking is permitted, and loading arrangements gives the carrier a much more useful starting point. Keep private customer information out of a public posting.

When should you compare other equipment?

If the shipment requires a controlled temperature, compare a Reefer. If its shape or loading method needs open access, compare a Flatbed or other suitable equipment. Confirm the requirements with the posting business rather than changing the equipment based on the commodity name alone.

Questions worth asking

Does a Dry Van control temperature?

Do not assume it does. If a shipment needs a temperature range, confirm suitable temperature-controlled equipment and written instructions.

Can every Dry Van carry the same weight?

No. Available payload depends on the actual tractor/trailer combination, equipment condition, shipment distribution, and applicable limits. Confirm the specific equipment and route.
