What is a Reefer trailer?
A Reefer is an insulated trailer equipped for temperature-controlled transportation. The equipment configuration, refrigeration unit, and airflow arrangements determine how it can support the shipment. Some configurations offer separate temperature zones; do not assume that every trailer does.
Choose equipment based on the shipment’s documented requirements. The product name alone does not establish the correct temperature or handling method.
Confirm the temperature plan before pickup
Request written instructions for the required temperature range, equipment operating mode, product condition at loading, and any preconditioning. Confirm how temperature is monitored and which records are expected at delivery.
- Get the required range and instructions from the shipper.
- Confirm the trailer configuration and operating requirements.
- Agree on preconditioning and product checks at pickup.
- Confirm airflow, loading pattern, and packaging requirements.
- Identify who to contact if an instruction or temperature reading is unclear.
Plan loading, unloading, and the record trail
Ask about appointment windows, loading duration, multiple stops, and the condition of the freight at handoff. Confirm how seals, temperature records, and exceptions will be documented.
An instruction such as “keep cold” is not specific enough for planning. A useful posting identifies that a Reefer is required and notes that the shipper’s written temperature and handling instructions must be confirmed. Do not invent a temperature setpoint.
Account for more than tractor fuel
A trip estimate should include costs that apply to the actual move. Refrigeration unit fuel or power, washout, extra stop time, and required services may be relevant. Our trip calculator estimates tractor fuel from the miles and MPG you enter; add other applicable costs separately.
Questions worth asking
Is a Reefer only for frozen freight?
No. Temperature-controlled requirements differ by product and shipment. Confirm the required range and equipment capabilities instead of assuming frozen service.
Does the fuel calculator include the refrigeration unit?
Not automatically. The calculator uses the mileage and MPG you enter for tractor fuel. Include refrigeration fuel or power and other services in Other trip costs.

Manufacturer examples describe their own equipment. Official carrier records and actual shipment requirements should be checked for the business and move being reviewed.
