What is a Flatbed?

A Flatbed has an open deck rather than an enclosed cargo box. Depending on the shipment and loading site, open access can accommodate loading from above or the side. Freight dimensions, placement, support, and protection must be planned for the actual equipment.

Start with complete dimensions

Confirm the weight and dimensions of every piece, including packaging and any projections. Identify how the shipment will be lifted, placed, supported, and unloaded. Compare those requirements with the carrier’s actual trailer configuration.

  • List each piece’s length, width, height, and weight.
  • Describe lifting points, packaging, and support requirements.
  • Confirm loading and unloading equipment at both ends.
  • Agree on weather protection and tarping requirements.
  • Have the carrier confirm equipment, securement, route, and any permit requirements.

Flatbed and Step Deck are different configurations

A standard Flatbed generally has a level deck. A Step Deck, also called a drop deck, has an upper section and a lower main deck. The lower section changes the available vertical space, but it does not by itself establish that a shipment is suitable or that a route needs no permits.

Use actual manufacturer specifications and the carrier’s route assessment. This guide does not supply legal size limits or a securement design for a particular shipment.

Give carriers the information they need

A useful posting identifies the equipment requirement and summarizes dimensions, weight, loading access, and protection needs. Keep detailed handling instructions available for the carrier to review.

For example, “machinery” is less useful than a piece count, packaged dimensions, total weight, loading method, and a clear statement about weather protection. Confirm the final plan with the shipper and carrier before arranging transportation.

Questions worth asking

Is a Step Deck always a substitute for a Flatbed?

No. Deck sections, loading height, usable lengths, weight distribution, and loading access differ. Confirm the actual configuration for the shipment.

Does a Flatbed posting mean tarps are included?

Do not assume they are. Confirm whether protection is required, who supplies it, and whether any additional service charges apply.
